CIPANGO presents Japanese materials and furniture at Clerkenwell Design Week, London

360 Design Consultants Ltd were delighted to once again visit CIPANGO to view and discuss their amazing hand crafted Japanese artisan products.

Technology Meets Tradition at TOTO in Clerkenwell showcases the versatility, craftsmanship, and transformative potential of CIPANGO products through its cutting-edge interior design and architectural applications.

CIPANGO is a representative of a select group of traditional Japanese arts & crafts studios who have reinterpreted their ancient techniques to meet new modern applications. The CIPANGO collection on view at TOTO in Clerkenwell includes such highly-regarded artisanal works as Harigane woven metal; Youbi hinoki furniture; Tatinoya woven wood and Maruni woodblocks and paper work.

CIPANGO’s mission is to celebrate and help save these traditional techniques, skills and materials by introducing them to a new global audience and by demonstrating their versatility to the architectural and interior design communities. A site specific Tea House, designed by Squire & Partners architects, and a selection of specially curated wall hangings enable visitors to engage intimately with these specialist techniques.

CIPANGO is a niche social enterprise that matches architects, designers and other project professionals in the building, design and luxury industries with select artisans from Kyoto and other handcraft-rich regions.

HARIGANE : Harigane metal mesh fabric represents a dynamic and innovative addition to interior design, offering a unique blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal. Crafted from fine metal wires intricately woven into a flexible mesh, using the traditional Nishijin technique of weaving – the creations are a type of post-modern alchemy. The mesh of micro threads diffuses a rainbow of light, shimmering and emitting different effects as light sources shift. This versatile material introduces a contemporary character into a wide variety of interiorinteriors and exteriors, treating the eye to a multidimensional visual experience.

YOUBI furniture : Youbi wants to change Japanese furniture”, according to Masayuki Oshima, Youbi’s founder and a furniture craftsman. Youbi designs contemporary furniture - from stools and benches, to chairs and tables - all with a strong modern aesthetic and crafted from Japanese Hinoki or cypress trees, both native to central Japan. There is a Japanese government initiative ‘Nishiawakura 100 Year Forest Plan’ to manage the cypress sustainability. The mountainous region around the village of Nishiawakura, where Youbi is based, has been officially classified as the ““Environmental Model City” in Japan to lead the future of forestlands. In this region there has been overplanting and neglect, with ageing forest owners losing their motivation, mountains are not being properly managed. Times are now changing, and Youbi is pioneering this movement.

TATINOYA : Tatinoya’s union of traditional weaving and wood has resulted in a beautiful and innovative material: ki-ori, or ““woven wood”; resulting in a lightweight, durable and pliable material that remains resistant to bending through the aid of a natural resin. Ki-ori carefully and respectfully preserves the original grain of the wood. This enchanting material is sewable, stable to surrounding climatic changes, water- and germ-resistant, enables 3D forms, and where possible, is generally sourced from leftover planks and veneers. Tatinoya has received a Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry award for this unique, innovative textile.

MARUNI : Maruni, a century old atelier of paper mounters, also create striking woodblock prints and karakami (China paper), a natural-fibre paper hand printed with patterns which are pressed from carved magnolia blocks. Maruni artisans have developed their specialist printing techniques to create luminous, large scale works and unique wall prints for both residential and commercial projects.

On show at TOTO’s Technology Meets Tradition exhibition:

Architectural Mesh Panels: architectural metal and wood mesh panels combine functionality with design versatility, allowing for the creation of facades, partitions, and space-defining elements. With a range of weave patterns, finishes, and customisation options available, these panels offer architects and designers limitless possibilities for transforming interior and exterior environments.

Interactive Exhibits: The exhibit will feature interactive displays showcasing advanced techniques, material properties, and sustainability initiatives. Attendees will have the chance to engage with CIPANGO design experts and learn about the process behind creating custom solutions tailored to their specific project requirements.

Design Collaborations: CIPANGO will highlight its collaborative project with a renowned architectural practice, demonstrating the versatility and adaptability of metal mesh fabric in the context of a Tea House. This collaboration exemplifies the capabilities of Harigane woven metal fabric and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation and creativity in the field of architectural and interior design surfaces.

Sustainable Initiatives: As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, CIPANGO will showcase its manufacturers practices, reuse materials, and energy-efficient production methods. By prioritising environmental responsibility throughout their operations, CIPANGO companies aim to inspire positive change within the design industry and contribute to a more sustainable future.

The images captured at the exhibition showcase some of the beautiful materials that were featured in their first US exhibition 'Re-Imagined', which was held in partnership with the celebrated FJ Hakimian Gallery last month. These distinct and quintessentially Japanese products were wonderfully received by the NY market, and 360DC are pleased to share them with our audience as they might be of interest for your next interiors project.

Below are a selection of pieces made by CIPANGO's traditional Japanese craftsmen, designers and artisans; works that celebrate ingenuity and inventiveness, a respect for natural resources and materials, and a deep understanding of traditional practices across various modes of creation in Japan through time. Exploring themes of tradition and evolution, sustainability and up-cycling, these pieces combine innovation with an empathy and reverence for nature and for what has come before.

Included in the selection below are Harigane’s luminous and reflective woven metal textiles; Yokoyama Bamboo’s rich yet delicate hand woven cedar and bamboo designs; the wall covering collaborations of Chicago based artist, Jaclyn Mednicov, and the celebrated Japanese wood block printers, Maruni; as well as the most elegant and unique woven wood fabrics from Tatinoya.

FJ Hakimian and Cipango are pleased to present Re-Imagined: New work from Traditional Makers, Designers and Artists from Across the World. Featuring objects and surfaces by Annika Andersson (Sweden), Hamrei (UK, Portugal), Harigane (Japan), Jaclyn Mednicov x Maruni (USA, Japan), Veronica Pock (The Netherlands), Maria Sigma (UK, Greece), Mariana Silva Varela (Sweden), Momoka Gomi (UK, Japan), Tatinoya (Japan), and Yokoyama (Japan); this group exhibition celebrates ingenuity and inventiveness, a respect for natural resources and materials, and a deep understanding of traditional practices across various modes of making. Exploring themes of tradition and evolution, sustainability and up-cycling, each of these artists/design collectives combine innovation with an empathy and reverence for nature and for what has come before.

Re-imagined brings together a range of designs in different media, including wood, metal, abaca, and cassette tape, to name but a few. This selection of surfaces and objects proposes a conversation between traditional, historic design methods and vernacular, and a desire to evolve and adapt these practices to meet current ecological and environmental concerns. Showcasing work that can be used in both residential and commercial settings, interior and exterior design, Re-imagined features hand woven and loom woven textiles as well as hand made objects from seven countries across three continents. Some pieces exist as unique, stand alone works of art and others serve as functional and decorative surfaces for walls, ceilings, room dividers, cars, furniture, and fashion.

A seaside sensitivity and sensibility has been thoughtfully considered in curating this Hampton’s exhibition. For example, Harigane’s expression of luminous woven metal is an ideal material for coastal projects and locations, as the stainless-steel threads are rust proof and hard wearing. Visually the metallic textiles are beautifully reflective, catching the ever-changing seaside light throughout the days and seasons. Likewise, Mariana Silva Varela’s hand woven, naturally dyed linen and wool, loosely interspersed with lustrous Japanese gold thread, captures and reflects the sunlight, creating a magical play of light and shadows. Inspired by the dunes and cliffs of the Portuguese coast, Hamrei’s DUNE table lamp, combines hand woven horsehair, hand chiseled limestone and hand textured black steel; hours of meticulous work using responsibly sourced materials culminating in an enchanting balance of hard and soft.

From two distinct yet complementary Kyoto based collectives, Re-imagine also features rich yet delicate hand woven cedar designs by Yokoyama Bamboo, as well as the most elegant woven wood fabrics, ki-ori, from Tatinoya. Tatinoya’s unique and proprietary wood weaving method marries innovation with traditional Japanese arts and crafts to create the most stunning natural expression of textile design, celebrating wood as a raw material and bringing warmth and harmony to any design project.

Another union of disparate yet harmonious elements are the wall covering collaborations of Chicago based artist, Jaclyn Mednicov, and the celebrated Japanese wood block printers, Maruni. Mednicov brings a fresh perspective and experimental techniques to Maruni’s traditional methods, layering and modifying their designs to reinterpret patterns from deep in Japan's Karakami history. The result is a beautiful balance of past and present, nature and technology.

Thematically linking much of the work is a sensitivity and engagement with sustainability and environmental issues. With materiality as a starting point, Veronica Pock gives value, meaning and new life to apparently worthless, throw-away materials. Pock’s Untitled incorporates vintage cassette tape in its weft. Echoing the music and memories that are embedded in the material, the woven piece loops round and through itself in a perpetual dance of light and dark. Maria Sigma, an award-winning textile designer and weaver, specializes in 'zero waste’, ethical, hand woven textiles. Sigma's Apricity Wall Piece IIA , inspired by an abstract view of nature and her Greek heritage, addresses ecological concerns through her use of all natural materials including un-dyed British wool, naturally dyed Indigo linen, un-dyed jute, and un-dyed waste sisal.

Lastly, Annika Andersson’s bubbles and landscape pieces take inspiration from ancient shibori, turning flat fabric into 3-dimensional, sculptural forms, “in a slow, growing organic procedure where a movement is repeated over and over again, bubble by bubble.” Momoka Gomi pieces from her Recollection and Eden series, focus on process, the organic accident, and the material appreciation.

Wallpaper Trends 2023

360 Design Consultants are predicting the next big trends for 2023, will see a mix of animal/jungle, opulent golds, sophisticated geometric shapes, and a continuing theme of all things Japanese, in many interior projects. We partner some of Europe's largest and most established wallpaper companies, so we are confident we have the perfect wallpaper for your next project. However, should you have a very individual design - we can print anything in-house on our large format printers to any size and on a range of paste the wall media types.

Animal | Floral | Jungle

In 2020 Chintz was a big design favourite - particularly because many designs included elements of animal and jungle themes. That trend has continued to emerge since then, and for 2023 we are delighted to provide a large range of designs that include Animal | Floral | Jungle themes with lush tropical backgrounds.

Geometric

We absolutely love a bold vibrant 3D or geometric design on any wall, but they are particularly suitable for business premises where a specific area needs some personality, making the atmosphere more engaging and pleasing. It's a well known fact that an office area with a strong visual sense of purpose, helps to make staff more productive, because they are more mentally soothed. In the home, there are many possibilities to use a vibrant geometric design, whether it's in a kitchen or lounge or making a kids bedroom altogether more exciting. Whatever you decide - we will have a design that will revolutonise your space.

Japan

Japanese themes with bold colours and abstract designs provide any interior with a sense of the far east that you just can't source in the shops. 360DC specialise in printing in-house these dynamic and beautiful designs.

Sophisticated Golds & Mustards

For 2023.... many clients are as 'keen as mustard' to include a sophiticated gold or mustard wallpaper design into their living and work spaces. We have a massive range of very sophisticated and opulent wallpapers and adhesive vinyls for furntiure and statement areas, that include key design trends, featuring elements in gold, precious metals and glitter.

3D/Geometric

Chintz

It's clear that Chintz designs have made a massive come-back in recent years, and for 2020 we think there will be a strong focus on bold floral and forest patterns - particularly with Flamingo and Toucan themes with lush tropical backgrounds.

Alternatively we feel that Japanese themes with soft Cherry Blossom provide any bedroom, lounge or snug with a sense of the far east from a design you just can't source in the shops.

Nature & Wildlife

Nature & Wildlife designs are really popular currently - particularly so because of the pressure on the planet from climate change and deforrestation. It's a tragedy unfolding before our very eyes - so what better way to be reminded of the beauty around us in the natural world, than selecting one of our iconic designs.

Leopard themes are beautiful on any wall, but there are literally thousands of possibilities from the natural world .... so we will be adding in dozens and eventually hundreds of nature and wildlife images to our catalogues in the coming days and weeks ahead.

Retro

From classic 50's and 60's Americano to wall paper designs that graced the walls of pop stars and stateley homes - we will be adding a large library of retro images that will brighten any room, making life fun and gorgeous!

We are particularly keen to work with boutique hotels, cocktail bars, night clubs and American themed restaurants in selecting affordable designs that can transform the atmosphere of any room or event area.

Print Show 2019 HP 355 Latex Printer

360 Design Consultants Ltd Managing Director Kerry Ballard was delighted to attend The Print Show 2019 at the NEC, Birmingham, where she met with James McCourt (Group Graphics Specialist) at Stanford Marsh Group, to discuss the HP Latex 355 Print & Cut Bundle. James kindly spent several hours with Kerry at the show, to help build knowledge and product awareness.

At the HP stand Kerry spoke with Michael Lewis (HP Channel Account Manager LFPro), Phil Oakley (UK&I Regional Business Manager LFP), Bruce van Greunen and plenty of specialist colleagues to learn all she could about the 355 Latex printer's capabilities for a large commercial operation.

Thank you very much to James and Amy from Stanford Marsh and all the HP team on the stand - it was an impressive tradeshow and we are very much looking forward to The Print Show 2020, but even more so - we are looking forward to all the creative possibilities this fantastic latex printer will generate for us and our customers.
